The year 2022 led me on a journey of self-reflection, where I delved into the essence of true happiness and contentment as a human being. Recognizing our place within this awe-inspiring ecosystem and planet we call 'home,' I understood that I had to do more - strive for personal growth, embrace challenges, and venture into unexplored territories.
In this new adventure, I've learned a lot about myself, how to prioritize what is important for me in life - people and connections, and I found a new passion - Ceramics!
The year 2023 has been nothing short of extraordinary. It has witnessed significant changes in my life - leaving behind my corporate job, undertaking a comprehensive overhaul of my life/finances, and finally embracing the path of entrepreneurship as a small business owner.
With a mix of design know-how and a real passion for ceramics, Yod Studio came to life. Our studio in Setúbal, Portugal, is committed to creating products that have a positive and conscious impact on our lives. We strongly believe in the transformative power of design, as it has the ability to change the world, one step at a time.
In simpler terms, a skilled designer and passionate ceramist 🤍
Every piece is handmade in our studio, so each one of them is one-of-a-kind and has a unique production process. The individual characteristics of each piece give them their own personality, setting them apart as brothers and sisters rather than identical twins.
CERAMIC PROCESS
-
1
The initial step for every piece is clay preparation. We use a stoneware clay – grey in raw form, but light cream colored after its final firing.
-
2
Our products are crafted using the slip casting technique - water is extracted from the slip in contact with the mold walls. From casting to unmolding it takes more or less 4 hours (each).
-
3
Rounded edges are smoothed after slow drying to maintain shape. Once the clay is "bone-dry" (2-3 days, depending on the weather), it is ready to undergo its first firing process (24 hours schedule).
-
4
Once bisque fired, each piece is then hand glazed individually - with food safe & lead-free glaze. After drying, typically within a day, the pieces are ready for their second firing, called glaze firing (24-30h schedule).
SCENTED WAX PROCESS
-
1
To ensure high-quality scented wax, we wash our containers meticulously to remove dust and contaminants. Weigh raw materials precisely with a scale to maintain consistency and minimize waste.
-
2
Now it's time to melt our raw base material - natural olive wax - to around 85ºC. Once the wax reaches 85ºC, we set it aside until it cools to 75ºC, the ideal temperature to add our fragrance oils.
-
3
To guarantee quality and desired properties, scented wax products are cured for 3-8 days. This step is crucial for proper burning.
-
4
Before making it available for sale, each batch goes under several burning tests in order to make sure all our scented products perform as desired.
Our Commitment
Our studio is committed to creating products that have a positive and conscious impact on our lives.
We developed a mantra that all products designed and created in our studio must follow - "CONSCIOUS MAKING". Every piece must be created with intention and consciously, have the lowest impact on the environment, and always respect and value people and local economies.
